Today was Jamin's first day of kindergarten.
He felt very excited and a little nervous.
I loaded Travis & Libby into the stroller, and we walked to the bus stop together. Then we waited...
...and waited...
...and waited some more for bus #42. At Jamin's orientation last night, we were told the bus number and the time to expect it. In the meantime, I realized exactly how unsafe his bus stop is. His waiting area consists of a narrow embankment on the edge of a busy road. Not exactly ideal for a 5-year-old.
Just as we were about to pack ourselves into the car, bus 42 arrived. It faced away from the school with just 2 minutes to spare before class started, but I figured this was just first-day stuff, especially with a new school. Jamin happily climbed on the bus and waved goodbye.
A couple hours later, I resolved to call the school district to ask if the bus could drive into our subdivision for safety's sake (they've done this in the past). The transportation secretary pulled up Jamin's information. Puzzled, she said, "He seems to be assigned to two buses, bus 42 and bus 34." When I explained that he got on bus 42 at 7:58, she told me that #42 would have been en route to a different school at the time! What?!
My nerves calmed once she said Jamin arrived at the correct school. Thank goodness! Apparently, they had confused the schedules and told me the pickup time for bus 34 (which was odd, considering it never drove by in the 10 minutes we stood there... but I digress). In the end, she relayed the mishap to someone in charge, who is supposed to call me to iron all this out. I'm driving him myself until then.

Jamin's face beamed when I picked him up this afternoon. He had a great day! His teacher, Mrs. Atkins, is really sweet. Two of his church friends are in his class, which helped him feel more comfortable. He talked and talked about the kids, the playground, the library, the music room, and everything he learned. His first day was wonderful!
We look forward to a fun year!
